LASTRO/UniGe computing system

All along these practical work, you may need to use specific and distant computer facilities. It is thus important to be comfortable with the computing resources available at LASTRO and shared with the Department of Astronomy.

Official documentation

The complete documentation of the computing infrastructure can be found on the Computing System Documentation website. If you wish to use the infrastructure, we strongly encourage you to go through this documentation, and either ask assistants or send mail to astro-it-support@unige.ch.

Personal account

Specifically for TP-IV students, a personal account has been set up for each of them. Hence, the first step of this webpage this procedure should not be required.

Connecting to the computing system

Generally, you can access a distant computing facility either through command line from a terminal, or via a graphical interface software. Both are explained on the webpage How to connect to one of our computers.

The LESTA cluster

The actual server (or cluster) on which you can run scripts and perform complex computations is a called LESTA. Please have an extensive read of the LESTA documentation to get familiar with it, which will allow you to make the best choices depending on the type of code you want to run. These procedures are generally similar to all distant computing facilities, so it will certainly be helpful for your future as well!
